The hallways were alive with a cacophony of scents. Audrey Stone trudged through the muck on her way to class. Her senses had become overwhelmed by the musty skunk of teenage boys drenched in bad cologne. She had to restrain herself from covering her nose to block the assault of smell. Karin grabbed Ella's hand and dragged her down the street. Behind them the sound of sirens wailed.
"This is your idea of fun," Ella shouted in-between gasps of breath.
This was not fun. Of course Karin's idea of fun was doing something crazy like spray painting "Life is FUCKING good" on the local library. And now we're paying the price for it, Ella thought. Karin pulled her down an alley and pushed against the wall as the police cars whizzed by. Karin slid down the building wall and pulled out a cigarette.
"Those things are going to kill you," Ella said with crossed arms.

I couldn't help but stare. It wasn't the bright red hair-although that certainly helped. No, it was the voice that penetrated every fiber of the room. She sang in a husky voice that caught the attention of everyone in the bar. Even the smoke in the room seemed to be hanging on every note, completely immersed in her voice.
